Description
TitleBlanche Fryer
DescriptionBlanche Fryer was born in Christchurch, New Zealand but has made her home in the Selwyn District for many years. She first moved to Selwyn Huts, alongside husband and fellow artist, David Lloyd, after the 2011 earthquakes. The Selwyn District then became a permanent home when a church in Leeston was purchased to serve as a converted home, shared artist space and an occasional music venue for which they are renowned hosts. Their beautiful space is now called, “Mistlewood”.
Blanche works mainly in ceramic and paint, with her works hosted in exhibitions and galleries throughout Canterbury and the Selwyn District. Most notably in The Little River Art Gallery (Little River), York Street Gallery of Fine Art (Timaru), Lakeland Art Gallery (Leeston) and Down By The Liffey Art Gallery (Lincoln).
Her songwriting and recordings have been a collaborative labour of love with her partner, David Lloyd. Two of her original songs were featured in the 2010, Merging Landscapes Compilation CD, a selection of original music by Canterbury artists, sharing songs of community.
In her own words, Blanche tells some of her life’s story in “The Legacy Women in Music Series: Selwyn Edition” Podcast. Produced and recorded by Lynette Diaz in August 2023, initially airing on 26 March 2024. The Selwyn District Council Creative Communities Scheme provided funding for the programme.
