What is Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri | Selwyn Stories?

Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri | Selwyn Stories is a website which functions as a digital hub for the rich, unique, and authentic stories of the Waikirikiri Selwyn district. It is a place to share and discover information, knowledge, memories, and images of Selwyn and its people.

What kind of content does it contain and where does it come from?

Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri Selwyn Stories comprises a variety of digital content, including articles and narratives, photographs, oral histories, documents, and other material relating to the district.

While Selwyn Libraries no longer collects physical heritage material, we do care for a small Selwyn Heritage legacy collection, some of which has been digitised and made available on this site and is also available for physical access on request (please contact archives@selwyn.govt.nz for more information).

Other content has been contributed by Selwyn-based museums, heritage groups and historical societies, as well as individual researchers and community members. When viewing a record, please check the Source and Attribution fields for information about where the item has come from, and ensure the correct source is credited when using or quoting the material elsewhere.

Who administers the site?

This online resource is administered by the Heritage and Content team at Selwyn Libraries, who moderate contributed content to maintain accuracy of information and compliance with copyright, as well as ethical and cultural guidelines.

We aim to ensure that Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri | Selwyn Stories is an inclusive, accessible and reliable source of information about the Selwyn district, however, mistakes do happen. If you notice something that isn’t quite right, please get in touch with us.

Who can contribute?

Anyone! If you have historical collections relating to Selwyn, memories and stories, or even contemporary photographs to share, we encourage you to contribute to Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri | Selwyn Stories. Together, we can create a valuable resource, by helping make important information available to all who wish to explore and learn about Selwyn’s history and culture.

Before uploading material to Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri | Selwyn Stories, please make sure that you have the right to share this content for public access. When you upload files, you will be asked to assign a Creative Commons License. This will communicate how visitors to the site can make use of your content.

Who owns the content?

Aside from the Selwyn Heritage legacy collection, Selwyn Libraries doesn’t own the content uploaded to Kā Kōrero o Waikirikiri | Selwyn Stories but maintains a kaipupuri (stewardship) role over it. This means that contributors retain ownership of any content they upload to the site. Once uploaded, this content is available for everyone to see and interact with, under the terms of the Creative Commons license.

It is important that you record the source of any information or items you share to the site and any relevant attribution details and credit lines, so that people know who it belongs to and how to acknowledge the owner if it is used or quoted elsewhere.

How can I find support for digitisation?
