Liz Nichol
Description
TitleLiz Nichol
DescriptionLiz Nichol has been playing instruments and performing her original music since a young age in and around Canterbury. She was nurtured and encouraged by her family at a young age to take up autoharp and guitar, but her love for music grew well beyond her early years. From performing 1960’s-70’s folk songs at Bedford Row (Christchurch Folk Music Club), she went on to become a respected music teacher in Burnham (near her home), collaborating with her students to create many cherished contributions to the fabric of the Selwyn District. In between, and during, she continued to write and perform music and collaborate with a variety of Canterbury musicians.
Her detailed musical path and career was captured in a 2019 folk music commemorative book, published by Tony Hale, for the Christchurch Folk Music Club.
Her original song, “Listen”, featured in the 2010, Merging Landscapes Compilation CD, a selection of original music by Canterbury artists, sharing songs of community.
In December 2023, Liz sat down with Lynette Diaz to record a podcast interview for the Legacy In Music Series: Selwyn Edition. In this personal interview, she speaks of her beginnings, some life altering tragedies and events, and about her passion for teaching. The Selwyn District Council Creative Communities Scheme provided funding for the programme.
