Art
Description
NameArtDescriptionArt is an integral part of our community life, encompassing the visual art and crafts, music, dance and storytelling.
The landscape of our district, with its towering mountains, braided rivers and winding roads have been long been a source of inspiration for artists. Significant Selwyn landmarks have been immortalised by artists such as Rita Angus through her portrayal of the railway station at Cass, and Bill Sutton in his representation of Bruce Creek.
Art expands into our public spaces with sculptural works found across the district. Bing Dawe's 'Pīwakawaka: Fantail over the Liffey' can be seen in the Lincoln Town Centre; Piri Cowie's 'Te Hekenga' outside Te Ara Ātea; Dr. Areta Wilkinson's 'Toru Atua' on the Rolleston Reserve and Doug Neil's 'Polytropos ll' in West Melton.
Lincoln University holds a nationally recognised collection of contemporary art that continues to added to by the collection curator. Works by significant Aotearoa New Zealand artists such as Llew Summers, Judy Darragh, and Robyn Kahukiwa can be found on display around the University Campus.
Te Ara Ātea is our new whare for the arts. Here you will see major visual artworks by Aotearoa New Zealand artists, beautifully curated taonga displays, object collections from around the district, and live music and performances.
