TitleTrooper George Duncan AbbottSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionGeorge was born 26 June 1888 in Southbridge, son of William and Isabella Abbott. Four of the Abbott children served, including his sister Fanny, two of whom, George and Ameral, died. Before enlisting he was a farmer at Southbridge. He was 5ft 4½in tall with blue eyes and light brown hair.
At the memorial service held at St. John's after his death was announced the minister spoke of his membership of the Bible Class and Men’s Club. He was also a member of the managing committee of the church and always attended the monthly meetings. The minister described him as “one of our young men who took a deep interest in everything that pertained to the welfare of this congregation. There were kindly deeds done by him and ready help given in quiet unostentatious ways, which showed that his heart was full of goodwill to his fellow men.”
George enlisted on 7 December 1914 at Trentham. He was assigned to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles embarking for Suez on 14 February 1915 with the 3rd Reinforcements. He had a bout of cellulitis and was admitted to hospital in Cairo on 20 June 1915. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Mounted Rifles and sent to Gallipoli on 8 August. He was declared missing, last seen on 28 August during the attack on Hill 60 and finally reported dead on 14 January, aged 28. His name is recorded on the Hill 60 Memorial to the Missing, Gallipoli. George is remembered on the Ellesmere County Memorial, on the Southbridge plaque.
