Otewhata Southbridge
Description
NameSouthbridgeOtewhataDescriptionSouthbridge is Leeston's smaller, southern neighbour. The name 'Southbridge' comes from Charles Joseph Bridge, an early resident, who incorporated his own last name.
The Southbridge Branch between Christchurch and Southbridge was bustling railway line that opened on the 31st of July, 1875. In the early 1900s, three trains would run each way daily. In the 1920s, the line declined and passenger journeys were cancelled on the 14th of April. The Southbridge Branch closed entirely on the 30th June 1962.
Much of the industry in Southbridge is focused on providing rural support for the surrounding, mainly agricultural, area. However, recently, because of its locality and charm the township has become increasingly popular as a 'home base' for families working in Christchurch.
Ngāti Moki marae, a marae of Ngāi Tahu and its Te Taumutu Rūnanga iwi, is located in Southbridge. Geolocation[1]
