DescriptionSouthbridge Horticultural Society started in 1897 and since January 1899 has held annual shows for flowers, vegetables, cookery and home produce, floral art, industrial work (arts and crafts) and photography in Southbridge.

The editor of the Ellesmere Guardian wrote on 11 January 1899, the day of the first show, that he hoped that the work of the Society would address the issue of larrikinism in the district: 'If we can get our growing boys to take up vegetable and flower gardening and if we further stimulate their efforts by healthy competition, we shall refine their tastes, and in doing so shall wean them from much that is demoralising and degrading'.
