The Importance of the Oak Tree
Description
TitleThe Importance of the Oak Tree
DescriptionLike other druid societies, the UAOD adopted the oak tree and acorns as part of their iconography. They were often present across their logos, ceremonial items such as gavels, and even inspiring lodge names. Oak leaves were placed on the coffins of former members as a sign of respect.
The term druid (derwyydd in Welsh) derives from the words derw (oak), and gwydd (wisdom or knowledge). While exact translations of the term vary, druid is often translated as ‘knowledge of the oak’ or ‘wise ones of the oaks.’ The oak tree became the symbol of modern druidry, including the UAOD. It represented strength, authority, and endurance, with the acorn, being the seed of the oak tree, represented growth and potential. Together they represented life.
