TitleLeeston High StreetDescriptionAn early photograph by the Burton Brothers of Leeston High Street, looking towards the hotel corner, showing two men standing in the middle of the street, wearing Victorian dress with bowler hats. Businesses of the period can be seen, such as T. W. Durant, the blacksmith and ironmonger, and a 'tailor and clothier' (William Johnston).
According to Selwyn historian George Singleton, the two-storey house was built in 1881 for William Johnston (tailor). Beyond that is T. W. Durant's premises (by that time it was the Ellesmere Guardian office). Durant started as a blacksmith in 1870 and branched out into coachbuilding and general merchandise. The house beyond that belonged to J. H. McMillan (proprietor of the Ellesmere Guardian).
On the left-hand side the building with the lean- to front is the first Leeston Presbyterian Church vacated in 1870 when St David's was built.
Next is a large store on the site where the NZ Farmers Co-op was later built. Datec1883SourceTe Papa Tongarewa C.014108PhotographerThe Burton Brothers
