TitleSergeant Frederick Dutson Moss SummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionFrederick was born 11 April 1879 at Christchurch, son of William Alfred and Mary Ann Moss. He is recorded on the 1911 Electoral Roll as a farm labourer at Hororata. However he obviously had an inventive mind for in November of 1912 he applied for an American patent for a new handle fastening method. At the time of his enlistment he was a Farm Manager for the Remount Department.
The War Office had requested the New Zealand Government to send two veterinary mobile sections and two veterinary hospital sections to Egypt. Suitable men were selected for the various duties which were to be done under veterinary officers, and were trained at a remount depot, which was established at Upper Hutt. He was 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall, with a dark complexion, blue eyes and black hair.
Frederick enlisted 10 November 1914 at Upper Hutt and was assigned to the New Zealand Veterinary Corps, the No.2 Mobile Vet Section. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1st December shortly before he embarked with the Second Reinforcements on 14th December for Suez, Egypt. He was attached to No.1 Australian Light Horse Brigade at Zeitoun on 1 January 1916. It was reported that he took a chill which led to his fatal illness. He had taken part in some exceedingly arduous operations, and was for two months almost continuously in the saddle. He died on 27 November 1916 of pancreatitis and heart failure. He was buried in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. In New Zealand, he is remembered on the Hororata War Memorial although his initials are given as F.
