Description
TitleDriver Hector Stewart GouldenSummaryThe obituary for a soldier in World War One.DescriptionOn June 28, 1942, killed in action somewhere in the Middle East, Driver Hector Stewart, second son of Isabella and the late George J. Goulden, of Southbridge, aged 32. He gave his life for his country.
A message was received on Tuesday evening- by Mrs G. J. Goulden, of Southbridge, that her second son, Driver Hector Stewart. Goulden, had been killed in action during the fighting in the Middle East on June 28, when the New Zealanders made their heroic attempt to stem the Axis advance. The news has since been received with very keen regret by a large number of friends throughout the district, among whom Driver Goulden was exceedingly popular. Born at Southbridge, where he received his primary education, Driver Goulden later attended the Christchurch Technical College. Eventually he joined the staff of the N.Z. Farmers' Co-operative Assn., at Leeston, and in course of time became head of the grocery department. Several years ago he was transferred to the firm's Ashburton branch, leaving his position there to join the Army. Shortly before he left New Zealand, Driver Goulden married Miss Baikie, of Waimate, a sister of Mrs D. F. H. White, of Leeston. The family of which Driver Goulden was a member has a fine record of service in the armed forces. One brother, Lieut. D. A. Goulden, has been in the Middle East since the early part .of the campaign. Another, Alan, is training for the Air Force in Canada, and the youngest, Ray, is training with the Territorials and is expecting to go into the Air Force shortly.
