NameTe Ara Ātea Heritage Exhibitions, 2023
DescriptionOur Heritage exhibition cases at Te Ara Ātea celebrate the rich history across the Selwyn District, in four sets of exhibition cases. The five small cases in the Community Lounge display ā matou kōrero kai, our place in food, while the five cases in the stairwell, tō tātou nei aroha or love in the district, tell individual stories of endeavours made 'for the love of ...'. The five cases incorporated within our Te Waka Huia space on level one hold a series of taonga, items that have precious connections to people of our community. Finally, the six large cases around the perimeter of level one of Te Ara Ātea are multi-layered, telling up to three stories at once.
This collection contains the second suite of exhibitions in these cases that opened in October 2023. These were developed by our Heritage team and installed by Workshop E. They tell stories about Jessie, Lady Rhodes, Cath Brown, shelterbelts, chicory, Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture, mining at Glentunnel, Nōti Raureka, the Ōtira tunnel, Norman Kirk's plan for a new town at Rolleston, and the RNZAF air station at Weedons.Date2023
