DescriptionWilliam Weeden owned the accommodation-house 'Half-Way House' on the Great South Road from March 1861. It was the first stopping place for Cobb and Co. coaches travelling south from Christchurch, and in 1863 was a central hub for the delivery of wool from local farms to the wharves. Weeden was announced as Postmaster of Weedens in May 1863. In August 1863 Weeden was charged with committing a breach of the Public House Ordinance, by supplying Mr. Worsley with liquor while in a state of drunkenness. The case was dismissed. However the development of the railway from 1863 changed the fortunes of Weeden, and by the end of 1863 he became insolvent, with his estate wound up in 1867.
