TitlePrivate George Henry BarnettSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionGeorge was born at Greenpark on 9 February 1894, youngest son of Thomas Robertson and Margaret Barnett. He attended Greenpark school and after leaving school he assisted on his father’s farm. He had previous military experience with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. His name was drawn in the ballot and a summons was issued 17th April 1917. He appealed on 23 April but the appeal was adjourned 'sine die ire’, or no date set for another meeting. During the appeal he noted that his father was 71 and his mother 47 and all his brothers were younger than himself. There were also four sisters to support.

He duly reported at Trentham on 15 July 1918 and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He died on 14 November 1918, aged 24. The Press reported that 'Having undergone training in the Featherston Military camp, he was accorded a public send-off at Greenpark when down on final leave last September, but, not being among the chosen number of his Reinforcement to proceed to the front, he remained in camp. Taking advantage of the leave given, he came home for Carnival Week and contracted influenza, from which he never rallied. The funeral, a military one, took place at the Springston Cemetery on Saturday. A squad of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry was present, under Capt.
