Private Frederick Leonard Simpson
Description
TitlePrivate Frederick Leonard SimpsonAlternative NameLeonardSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionFrederick, who seems to have been known as Leonard, was born at Lincoln on 22nd April 1892, son of Frederick and Emma Jane Simpson. He attended school at Lincoln and then took up work as a farm labourer. At the time of enlistment he was working for B. Corry at Morven, near Waimate. He had previous military experience having served with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment. He was 5ft 7½ in tall with a medium complexion, blue eyes dark brown hair. However with the army’s fixation with the soldiers eating ability the medical examination noted “very poor teeth” and added “should all come out”. It is not clear if they did but he was passed as fit to serve.
Leonard enlisted on 20 September 1916 and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade Reinforcements, G Company. He embarked 19 January 1917 on board the Waitemata and the next day he was detailed as cook and given extra pay. He arrived in Devonport on 28 March and marched into Sling camp the same day. On 24 April he was posted to the 3rd Battalion Auckland Regiment and left for France on 28 May. He was killed in action 4 October 1917, aged 25. He was buried at the time according to the report “about 100 yards north west of the Otto Farm Pillbox”. However as happened when land was turned over by tanks and artillery fire, his body was not found or recognised later and so his name is inscribed on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, Ypres, Belgium. Frederick is remembered on the Lincoln Roll of Honour and upon the Waimate War Memorial. After news of his death reached New Zealand in October the flag at Lincoln District High School was flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.First NameFrederick LeonardLast NameSimpsonFamilySon of Frederick and Emma Jane SimpsonDate of Birth22 April 1892Place of BirthLincolnDate of Death4 October 1917Place of DeathFranceCause of DeathKilled in actionAge at Death25
