DescriptionAlexander, known as Alick, was born 27th August 1888 at Reefton, son of James and Letitia Stevenson. He worked as a farmer on Springs Road, Prebbleton. He had previous military experience having served with the Reefton Volunteers and also the Nelson College Rifles. He was 5ft 8¾ inches tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
Alick enlisted 12th October 1915 at Trentham and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He embarked with the 4th Battalion on 5th February 1916 and disembarked in Suez 15 March 1916. Less than a month later he embarked for France from Alexandria on board the Alaunia on 7th April arriving on the 14th. He survived 5 months of the Somme battles but was killed in action on 15th September, the opening day of the battle for Flers. He was initially buried close to where he fell, 3 miles North West of Combles, but was reburied by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the Bulls Road Cemetery, Flers.
