TitlePrivate George Warwick ThompsonSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionGeorge was born 15 November 1895 at Prebbleton, son of George Alfred and Mary Jane Thompson. He was educated at the local school and was very well known and popular throughout the district. Before enlisting he was working as a labourer for W. Roberts at Addington. He was 5ft 10¾in tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. He also had a scar on his left leg.
He enlisted 12 January 1916 and was assigned to the 12th Reinforcements, Wellington Infantry Battalion, J Company. He embarked with them on the 6th May on board the Mokia bound for Suez, Egypt. Sent to England he arrived in Southampton on 7 August 1916 and to base at Sling Camp. He embarked for France and the Western Front on 28 August and was taken on the strength at Etaples a day later. He survived through the Somme battles of September and November but was admitted to hospital 3rd February 1917, initially with nephritis. Evacuated to hospital at Walton on Thames, he died three weeks later of pneumonia, nephritis and heart failure aged 22. He was buried at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.
