TitlePrivate Gilbert McGillSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionGilbert was born 6 June 1894 at Lakeside, eldest son of Ivie and Margaret McGill. Before he enlisted he was working on his father’s farm. He was educated at Sedgemere school and when news of his death arrived the school was closed for half a day as a mark of respect. Whilst at school he had served with the Senior Cadets and went on to serve with the 1st Regiment of Mounted Rifles. He was 6ft tall with a dark complexion, grey eyes and dark hair.
He enlisted on 13 October 1915 at Trentham and was assigned to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He embarked on the Maunganui on 8 January and arrived in Suez on 12 February 1916. He was taken ill in Moascar but recovered in time to join his unit on board the Ivernia bound for France on 20 May 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his legs and hand on 21 September and was taken to a field ambulance and then to a clearing station where he died of his wounds on the 23rd. Gilbert was buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Gilbert is remembered on the Southbridge Plaque, Ellesmere County War Memorial.
