Private Arthur George Hill
Description
TitlePrivate Arthur George HillSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionArthur was born 27 June 1895 in Dunsandel, fourth son of John and Alice Hill. He attended the Upper Selwyn School and after leaving school worked on local farms where he was much respected as a hard worker. His last employer was Mr G. Dickson of Chertsey. He had previous military experience having served with the Territorial in the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment. He was 5ft 7in tall with a fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair.
Arthur enlisted on 25 August 1915 at Trentham with his brother Bertie Charles (6/3349), as a member of the 8th Reinforcements and was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. He embarked on 13 November 1915 and landed in Suez just before Christmas 1915 and then joined his battalion in Ismailia. Four months later he sailed on the Franconia from Port Said for France. He was declared killed in action on 16th September after a board of inquiry in April 1917. His brother Bertie gave evidence that they were together when the battalion advanced toward Flers under a heavy barrage. Arthur stopped briefly and that was the last he had seen of him, although he had made exhaustive enquiries. Another soldier gave evidence that he had seen Arthur in a shell hole during heavy shelling. After a search of the hospitals it was concluded that he had been killed in action on the 16th, aged 20. However it seems his body was later found for CWGC records identify him and his burial in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme in grave Plot X1, Row B, grave 4. Arthur is remembered on the Dunsandel War Memorial.
