Description
TitlePrivate Albert Henery Bradshaw PepperellSummaryA soldier in World War One.DescriptionAlbert was born 1 July 1881, in Christchurch, son of Albert Edward and Katherine Evelyn Maud Pepperell. Henery spelt his name in an unusual way with an extra 'e'. His father had died by the time he enlisted and his mother had remarried. He listed his cousin, Alice Mary Beagley as his next of kin and made his will in her favour. Before enlisting Albert was a labourer working for the Ballugh Brothers at Hororata. He was 5ft 8in tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
Albert enlisted at Darfield on 13 October 1916 and was assigned to the 23rd Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company. Whilst at Featherston he spent a day confined to barracks after “creating a disturbance” on 8 February 1917. He embarked on board the Corinthic on 2 April 1917 and landed at Plymouth on 10 June. He marched into Sling Camp the same day and after a month left for France on 6th July. From there he joined the 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment and was posted to 1st Company in the field on 25th July. He was admitted to No.3 General Hospital “sick” and after treatment re-joined his unit on 4 April 1918. He was killed in action, aged 37, on 24 August 1918 when the battalion were in action around Biefvillers. He was buried near where he fell recorded as one half miles NW of Bapaume. After the war he was gathered in and he now lies in Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais. In New Zealand Albert is remembered on the Hororata War Memorial.
