TitlePrivate Charles TulleySummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionCharles was born 27th March 1893 at Christchurch, second son of Amos and Emily Tulley later of Springston. He had been employed at the New Zealand Farmers Co-operative Association in Christchurch but later was working as a groom for F. G. Woodward at Templeton. He was 5ft 7in tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes and sandy hair. He also had a faint pigmented mole on right thigh.
Charles enlisted on 26 February 1915 and was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. He embarked with the Fifth Reinforcements on 13 June the following year, bound for Suez and Egypt. He joined the battalion at Gallipoli on 16 August 1915 but only two days later on the 16th was admitted to the Hospital ship Ulysses suffering from debility and then the following day to the general hospital with diarrhoea being discharged a month later. He was sent on the SS Suvla to Mudros for further care and recuperation on 5 October. He does not seem to have recovered well for on 6th January 1916 he was admitted to hospital in Heliopolis, Egypt with mumps and resulting complications. It was 11th February before he was well enough to re-join his unit. Two months later he sailed from Port Said on the Franconia for France and the Western Front. He was slightly wounded at Armentieres on 11 July 1916 but remained with his unit. He was killed in action on 27 September 1916 when the New Zealand Division was involved in the Battle for Morval. His body was not recovered or identified and his name is recorded on the Caterpillar Valley Memorial to the Missing in the Somme. In New Zealand Charles is remembered on the Springston War Memorial.
