Private Herbert Hallas Thomas Sydney Summerville
Description
TitleHerbert Hallas Thomas Sydney SummervilleSummaryA soldier of World War One. DescriptionHerbert was born 25 August 1895 at Kirwee, son of William and Jemima Summerville. He was 5ft 6in tall with a ruddy complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. Before enlisting he was working as a labourer for Dr Simpson at Darfield.
Herbert enlisted on 19 October 1915 at Trentham and was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. He sailed on the 8 January 1916 on board the Maunganui and disembarked in Suez on 18 February 1916, joining up with the 2nd Battalion at Moascar on 8th March. He embarked for France a month later on 7 April and was attached to the Light Trench Mortar Battery on 11 May. He was wounded in the field on the 1 October, suffering a gun-shot wound to the chest. He was admitted to hospital at Etaples and evacuated to England on board the Stad Antwerpen. The wound seems to have been treated successfully for he was sent to convalesce at Hornchurch on 7th November and then to Depot at Codford on 10 January 1917 and to Sling Camp a month later. However, he was admitted to Tidworth Hospital on 12 May 1917 where he died the same day of what was suspected to be cerebrospinal meningitis. He was buried in the nearby Tidworth Military Cemetery. In New Zealand he is remembered on the Malvern County War Memorial.
Tidworth Military Cemetery, which contains burials of both wars, was directly connected with training grounds on, or near, Salisbury Plain. During the First World War, the cemetery was used for burials from Tidworth and Fargo Military Hospitals and the 417 graves, many of them of Australian or New Zealand servicemen, are scattered throughout the cemetery.First NameHerbert Hallas Thomas SydneyLast NameSummervilleFamilySingleSon of William and Jemima SummervilleDate of Birth25 August 1895Place of BirthKirweeDate of Death12 May 1917Place of DeathWiltshireCause of DeathDied of Sickness
