Gunner Ernest Piner
Description
TitleGunner Ernest PinerSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionErnest was born 16 July 1888 at Annat, third son of Charles and Annie Piner. He had previous military experience having served with the Hutt Valley Rifles. His height was not recorded but he was described as having a dark complexion, brown eyes and dark brown to black hair. He gave his last occupation as a wool grader for his father at Annat however other newspaper sources report that he had worked in the State Colliery. This may be why the Medical Officer wrote on his examination “this man’s physique is excellent.”
Ernest enlisted on 6th February 1915 at Trentham and was assigned to the New Zealand Field Artillery. He embarked on 17th April 1915 with the Fourth Reinforcements. He was at Gallipoli from 8th July 1915 but was only slightly sick with dysentery when sent to Malta two months later. He embarked for France with the 5th Battery on board the HMT Eboe from Alexandria. After arriving in France he was admitted to hospital on 17 June with deafness and was discharged four days later to re-join his unit in the field on 21st. October was a bad month for the Artillery with wet weather and constant enemy barrage which may have been when Ernest was wounded. He was admitted to the 37th Field Ambulance with severe gunshot wounds in both arms on 12 October 1916 and died the same day. He was buried in the Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt. In New Zealand Ernest is remembered on the Malvern County and Sheffield War Memorials.
