TitlePrivate Robert Henry MorganSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionRobert was born 21 Jun 1889 in the Chatham Islands, third son of William and Eliza Annie Morgan. Five of his brothers also served during the war. He spent the early part of his life in the Chatham Islands, where he also received the early part of his education. When the family moved to Canterbury he attended the Glentunnel School. Prior to enlisting he was employed as a shearer and packer for musterers, his last employer Mr Rutherford of “The Peaks” Medbury. He was 5ft 6½in tall with a reddish complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair.
He enlisted on 21 July 1915 and was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment and embarked on 13 June 1915 with the Fifth Reinforcements. After time at Gallipoli he spent a period of time in hospital in Ismailia suffering from gastritis in January 1916. Along with the New Zealand force he embarked on the Franconia for France on 6 April. He was admitted to hospital in Abbeville on 28 August with multiple wounds from a training accident. He was undergoing training in throwing live Mills grenades when one went off early in his hand. He died 11 September 1916, aged 27 and was buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France. Robert is remembered on the Malvern County and South Malvern War Memorials.
