Private George Leeming
Description
TitlePrivate George LeemingSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionGeorge was born on 10 September 1888 at Whitecliffs, eldest son of John Thomas and Selina Leeming. He was 5ft 9in tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. When war broke out he was working in the Masterton district as a station hand for H Bailey at Whakataki. George enlisted at Trentham, Wellington on 6 December 1914 and was assigned to the Auckland Infantry 16th Coy. He was on sentry duty on Somes Island, Wellington Harbour until 14 December, when he sailed with the Second Reinforcements.
He was amongst those who landed at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and this was the last day he was seen. Sadly, the troops were put ashore a mile north of their intended landing and there was considerable confusion. Although the landing and beachhead was achieved, over two thousand soldiers were wounded or killed that day. This is the action we mark with ANZAC Day. George was declared missing on 16 May 1915 and after a Board of Inquiry on 16 January 1916 he was recorded as killed in action on 25 April 1915. His name is engraved on the Lone Pine Memorial to the Missing, Gallipoli. In New Zealand George is remembered on both the Malvern County and South Malvern Memorials.
