TitlePrivate Albert Francis KennedySummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionAlbert was born at Annat on 9 November 1896, third son of William and Hannah Kennedy. Prior to joining up he was in the employ of Mr J. Watts at Rakaia as a shearer. He had previously worked at Waddington. He was 5ft 5¼in tall with a fresh complexion, grey eyes and light brown hair.
Albert enlisted on 13 March 1917 and was assigned to 28th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company. He embarked on board the Ulimaroa 26th July 1917 and disembarked 24 September 1917 at Plymouth where he marched in and was posted to Canterbury Infantry, 4th Reserve Group. He left for France on 26th October and into camp at Etaples on 29 October. On 8 November he was admitted to the 46th Stationary Hospital with measles but by 20th he was well enough to be sent on to No.6 Convalescent Depot, Etaples. From there to 4th Convalescent Depot at Trouville on 22th November and a month later once again he was back at Base Depot in Etaples. He joined 2nd Battalion Canterbury Regiment and was posted to 2nd Company in the field on 14 January. On 29 March 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to his temple. On that day the Battalion were part of the New Zealand forces tasked with stopping the advancing German army in the Ancre Valley. He was taken up by the No.1 New Zealand Field Ambulance and taken to the No.56 General Hospital at Etaples. Sadly he died there on 5 April, aged 32. He was buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. In New Zealand Albert is remembered on both the Malvern County and Sheffield War Memorials.
