Rifleman William James Jewell

TitleRifleman William James JewellAlternative NameBirth name given as William onlySummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionWilliam was born 30 November 1884 at Whitecliffs, son of James and Martha Jewell. He was 5ft 10¼in tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
He enlisted on 29 May 1915 and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. At the time of enlistment he was unemployed but described himself as a labourer. William was still in training at the Trentham Military Camp when he caught measles during the outbreak there which had killed over 22 others. He developed meningitis and later died in Wellington Hospital on the 4th July 1915, aged 32. His body was returned to Malvern for burial in the South Malvern Cemetery. He received a Military funeral with the cortege led by a detachment of Territorials and escorted by a large number of members of the Loyal Coleridge Lodge of Oddfellows, of which he was a member. After the service the Last Post was sounded and three volleys fired over the grave. William is remembered on the Malvern County and South Malvern War Memorials.
