TitleLance Corporal Harry Nesslea JarmanSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionHarry was born at Greendale on 29th January 1893, youngest son of Thomas and Annie Jarman. He was educated at the Greendale School, Darfield High School, and Christchurch Technical College. After leaving school he was a farmer and a prominent member of the Kirwee Football Club. He had previous military experience with the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. He was 5 ft 7in tall with a dark complexion, grey eyes and black hair.

Harry enlisted at Darfield on 6th October 1916 and was assigned to the 22nd Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in camp on 20th November and then before embarking promoted again to Corporal on 10th February 1917. He embarked on 15th February 1917 from Wellington on board the Navua arriving in Devonport on 24th April 1917 and marched into Sling camp the same day. As was usual he dropped in rank to temporary Lance Corporal. Exactly a month later on 26th May he left for France, marching into camp at Etaples on 28th. He joined 13th Company, 1st Battalion Canterbury Regiment in the field on 19 June, Again, as was usual he dropped in rank, reverting to private. Although this was amended to read 26th May, the date he left for France. On 20th November he was detached to Brigade School for instruction. In the new year he was sent on leave to England on 25th January, re-joining the Battalion on 31st February. He was appointed Lance Corporal again on 5th May replacing another who was ill. He was sent to hospital sick himself on 25th July but returned after just 3 days. He was killed in action, aged 25 on 25 August during the attack on Bapaume. He was buried in Grevillers British Cemetery near where he fell. In New Zealand Harry is remembered on the Malvern County War Memorial. He is also remembered in Trinity Church by the Jarman window. The window was given in memory of Frank Elworthy and Henry Nesslea Jarman who were killed in the Great War and James Herbert Jarman who died of wounds after the war. It was originally in the east end of St Andrews.
