NameSportsDescriptionWe are renowned for our sporting prowess. A number of former All Blacks hail from this district, including the legendary Robbie and Bruce Deans and Dan Carter. Former Halkett resident Don Hayes was captain of the Canterbury team during the shield era in the 1980s.
Some older rugby fans may recall Bob Deans and the famous disputed 'Deans try' at Cardiff Arms Park in 1905. In this collection, you can see some of the Deans family rugby memorabilia on display at their museum in Homebush – including the cap ‘Burly Bob’ wore during the 1905-06 All Black tour.
Netball is a popular sport in the Selwyn District and our passion for the game spans the decades. Netball continues to be the largest female-dominant sport in New Zealand, in numbers of players, spectators and profile.
This collection also celebrates other sports, like marching and hockey. In 2022, we opened two artificial turfs for hockey and football at Foster Park, Rolleston.
As a former student at Lincoln High School, we also claim New Zealand para-swimmer Dame Sophie Pascoe as our sporting hero!
