Our Community Life
Description
NameOur Community LifeDescriptionAs a community we come together for many joyous, notable and solemn occasions. We celebrate weddings, birthday parties and anniversaries. Crowds rally for parades, royal visits and openings of major infrastructure projects. We have also borne many losses, mourning the passing of loved ones and community members. We never forget to honour those who have served and fallen during wartime. Our collection of images show many such memorable moments. One shows a huge procession of mourners gathered for the funeral of Hori Kerei Taiaroa in Taumutu. Another photo from a bygone era features children from Hororata School lined outside the church to farewell Sir John Hall. Wedding parties in all their finery pose in front of homesteads and in photographic studios. Children in fancy dress, families’ parties, and huge crowds gathered for official events, shows and royal visits. During the royal tour of 1954, one photo shows hordes of local school children at Darfield Station, ecstatically waving flags as Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh walked the line. Earlier in 1920, crowds turned out in their thousands to honour her uncle Edward, Prince of Wales, who took time out from his tour to walk a short distance into the newly-opened Otira tunnel. For matters closer to home, thousands of residents turned out for the official opening in March 1961 of the Waimakariri water race. The date coincided with council's 50th birthday, so it was a double reason to celebrate. Mrs Jenkins had the honour of cutting the ribbon and the control gates were open to great fanfare.
