Before enlisting he was working a Farm Hand on Racecourse Hill Station for Mr. Knight. He married Ellen Sher in 1906 and they had four children, although one, their daughter had died young. He was 5ft 8in tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He also had a scar on his right thigh.
Edward enlisted on 22nd April 1916 and was assigned to the 17th Battalion on 1st June 1916. He was transferred to the Signaling Company a fortnight later and embarked with 18th Reinforcements Specialist Signaling Section from Wellington, New Zealand on board the Willochra on 16th October, 1916. They disembarked at Devonport on 29th December 1916 having spent Christmas at sea and were sent on to Sling camp. A few days later he was transferred to the 2nd Canterbury Company. He was admitted to 3rd New Zealand General Hospital at Codford on 30th January 1917 with broncho pneumonia and reported as “dangerously ill” three days later. Edward died the next day, aged 31 and was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Codford on 8th February, 1917. In New Zealand Edward is remembered on the Malvern County War Memorial. His wife left Darfield in April 1917 to live in Christchurch.
