TitleSergeant Robert DuffSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionRobert was born at Sefton on 9th August 1889, son of Robert and Margaret Duff. Before enlisting he was farming with his father at Irwell. He was a well-known and highly respected young fellow. He was 5ft 4in tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
Robert enlisted at Trentham on 20th December 1914 and was assigned to the 3rd Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Battalion. He embarked on 14th February 1915 for Suez and arrived in Egypt on 27th March 1915. He served at Gallipoli but as his statement of service is missing it is unclear about his service again until 12th October 1915, when he is in 2nd General Hospital, Manchester. From there he was sent to Hornchurch on 14th April 1916 and back to field on 12 May 1916. He was wounded in the forearm and sent to England 20th September 1916. By November he was well enough to go onto the convalescent section at Hornchurch and then to re- join his unit, 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, on 17th June 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25th July 1917 and then on 31 August to full Corporal. Finally he was sent to Corps School on 17th September returning on 25 October when four days later he was promoted to Sergeant. He was killed in action on 30th November 1917, aged 24. He was initially buried at Polderhoek but after the war his body was moved to Tyne Cot Cemetery, grave LVIII. A. 13. Flanders. In New Zealand Robert is remembered on the Irwell Plaque of the Ellesmere County War Memorial.
