Description
TitleCaptain Daniel Hay MachattieSummaryA soldier in World War One. DescriptionDaniel was born on 29 July 1879 in Aberdeen, Scotland, son of John (a horse dealer) and Mary Ann Machattie. Before enlisting he practiced his profession at Leeston for several years and was known throughout Canterbury as a very capable veterinary surgeon. He had graduated in Glasgow in 1900 and been recruited in Scotland by Mr Gilruth, founding officer of the NZ Veterinary Corps, arriving in New Zealand in 1901.
At the time the newspaper reported that “Mr Machattie, M.R.C.V.S., is twenty-two and a-half, and unmarried. He is a Glasgow man. He took up the veterinary profession at sixteen, and has seen a great deal of practice not only in Scotland, but also in New York and Montreal, Canada, and has been for some time acting as locum tenens for a veterinary surgeon in Perth." Daniel had previously commanded No.1 Veterinary Section at the remount Depot at Hutt Valley, Wellington.
He embarked on 14 December 1914 with the 2nd Reinforcements as one of twenty-four officers of the Veterinary Corps. In Egypt, he commanded a newly created Veterinary hospital on the east side of the Canal when No.2 Mobile Veterinary Section was converted into a hospital at Bir-el-Mala. He was sent to the 3rd London General Hospital for illness in October 1915 and embarked with C Draft to rejoin his unit in Egypt on 23 Feb 1916. He was attached to Depot at Alexandria on 1st August and then detached on duty to the Australian Depot at Heliopolis. He died of anemia and debility after a gunshot wound at Heliopolis on 20th December 1916. He was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. He is remembered on the Memorial Roll of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Daniel is remembered in New Zealand on the Ellesmere County War Memorial, Leeston Plaque.
At the outbreak of the First World War, Cairo was Headquarters to the United Kingdom Garrison in Egypt. With Alexandria, it became the main hospital centre for Gallipoli in 1915 and later dealt with the sick and wounded from operations in Egypt and Palestine. Cairo War Memorial Cemetery was formerly part of the New British Protestant Cemetery, but plots B, D, F, H, K, M, O,P and Q were ceded to the CWGC in 1920. Some graves were brought into these plots from elsewhere in the Protestant cemetery and later, 85 First World War graves were concentrated from Minia war cemetery, 200 km south of Cairo, where maintenance could not be assured.First NameDaniel HayLast NameMachattieFamilySingle Son of John and Mary Ann MachattieDate of Birth29 July 1879Place of BirthAberdeen, ScotlandDate of Death20 December 1916Place of DeathEgyptCause of DeathAnemia from a gunshot wound
