He was educated at the district school and after leaving school was farming with his father. He was 5ft 7 ½ in with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair.
Leonard enlisted on 26th June 1916 and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 9th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company. He embarked with them on board Willochra from Wellington on 6th October. He had been promoted to Corporal on 14th August 1916. He disembarked at Plymouth on 29th December and marched in to Sling Camp the same day and reverted to Lance Corporal with the 5th Reserve battalion. He was sent to the School of Instruction at Tidworth to study as a Musketry instructor. He qualified 2nd Class and was an instructor at Sling Camp. Then between 23rd April and 18th May he was sent to Hayling Island to be trained in how to use a Lewis Gun. The Lewis gun was a light machine gun which replaced the heavier Vickers Machine gun. He was promoted to Corporal on 10th May and then to Temporary Sergeant on 8th August. He then proceeded to Brocton, the base of the Rifle Brigade, where as usual he relinquished sergeant rank on 20th November before embarking for France. He marched in to Base depot at Etaples on 22nd November. He joined the3rd Battalion, 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade and was posted to D company in field on 31st December 1917. He was wounded in action on 5th May 1918 when a shell exploded nearby, suffering wounds to his head, chest and shoulder. Taken up by No 1 Field ambulance on 6th April 1918 he died of his wounds in the field, aged 33. He was initially buried at Beaussart in a grave located at the rear of main dressing station, 5 miles NW of Albert. After the war he was gathered in and is now buried in Hedauville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme. In New Zealand Leonard is remembered on the Tai Tapu War Memorial.
