The opening of Rolleston Service Centre and Library in 2000
Description
NameThe opening of Rolleston Service Centre and Library in 2001DescriptionThe Selwyn District Council's new Rolleston Service Centre and Library will open later this year.
Construction of the 330sqm library complex, being built on the north-east corner of the new Rolleston Community Centre, began earlier this month. It is part of a major building programme by the council to upgrade the delivery of its services throughout the district. Council chief executive Darryl Griffin says the Rolleston Service Centre will bring to four the number of fully serviced libraries for the district which covers 6500 square kilometres from the Pacific Coast to the crest of the Southern Alps. The others are at Leeston, Darfield, and Lincoln.
He says Rolleston residents will continue to be able to transact all council business at the new library which incorporates the service centre, including making appointments to see building inspectors, dog control officers and other council staff.
Selwyn District Council already has a presence in the community, choosing last year to centralise the district's driver licensing and testing agency at the new community centre.
There are plans to install a video link between all service centres. Darryl Griffin says the Rolleston Library will be modern and "not just another hall with shelves on the walls". It will have about 10,000 books." The council is spending an additional $270,000 this year to boost its book stocks, ensuring each of the district's four libraries and the new mobile library are adequately stock. He says Selwyn will maintain its links with the Christchurch City Council, providing residents with access to the city's library facilities.
