TitleThe red Cass railway jigger
DescriptionThe restored red Cass railway jigger is one of 40 that were built in the Addington Railway Workshops around 1959 - 1960.It is powered by a petrol motor that has a gearbox attached with a chain drive to the back wheels.
The rail jiggers like this that were powered by a motor were often referred to as 'motor trolleys.' They carried up to a maximum of four men on them, and were used for transporting track workers to various locations on the rail network to conduct repair work. The jiggers could be easily off-tracked onto what was called a jigger stand at the side of the railway line and that allowed a train to pass through at the same time while the jigger was off-tracked.
Where the jigger stands were located there were boards between the rails that allowed the jigger to be lifted from one end and turned side-on to the rail track for the jigger to be then pushed onto the stand clear of the railway line. When the track worker wanted to put the jigger back onto the railway track, they would first contact train control to get permission.Date21 October 2026SourceGraham Lawn
