Description'The George Forbes Library was opened by the Governor-General Viscount Cobham in August 1960 and was designed by architects Jones, Adams, Kingston and Reynolds.
A Liberal (later United) Party politician, George William Forbes (1869–1947) was MP for Hurunui from 1908 to 1943 and Prime Minister from 1930 to 1935. The Library was so named because of Forbes’ advancement of Canterbury Agricultural College interests in the mid-1920s when plans for Massey Agricultural College were underway.
The library was originally built as a single storey building, with 1975 extensions adding an additional seven floors and further wings added in the 1980s and 1990s.' - NZ History website
The building is one of only 13 known national memorials in New Zealand, and the only one in the care of Lincoln University (the others are in the care of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage). - George C. A. Forbes.
