TitleMead Community CentreDescriptionLocal fundraising for a community centre for Mead started in the late 1940s, with events such as dances, competitions, and the Mead Gala, held in the Mead School grounds on 29 October 1949. Hare drives (events where hares were hunted for sport and pest control) raised funds for the community centre in 1951 and 1952.
The building was officially opened at 2pm on Saturday 29 October, 1955 by local MP, Hon. J. K. McAlpine. A ball followed at 7.30pm.
The community centre was the site of many dances, including the annual Boxing Day Dance in the 1950s. It was also the home of the Mead Social Club; and the Mead branch of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers, which celebrated its 21st birthday there in 1957 with a banquet and a ball.
From the 1970s it was also a polling station for local and national elections.
