Description
TitleWomen of West Melton: Then and Now
DescriptionBrenda was born in 1927 to Alexander (Alec) and Agnes Ann (Annie) Campbell and lived with them in one of the Railway houses in Rolleston.
After her marriage to Alfred Athol Hulston, Brenda moved to West Melton in December 1950, where they lived on the Hulston Farm on Dawsons Road, and they later purchased more farmland next door on Newtons Road to maintain an economic-sized farm. Brenda kept a busy life on the farm, providing for her four children, the farm staff and seasonal workers.
Brenda was active in the West Melton Community, belonging to groups like the Plunket Society and the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, alongside catering for events such as the Cricket Club Opening Day and Ploughing Matches.
She was known for her community spirit and welcoming nature, which was reflected in the way the community rallied with the Hulston family after Brenda passed away. Many people organised to take care of the children – of whom two were at high school, one at West Melton Primary School, and one pre-schooler – and to run the farm.
She passed away aged 39 in April 1967 after struggling with asthma for much of her life.
