TitleWomen of West Melton: Then and Now
DescriptionBorn in Opawa, Christchurch, on the 27th of March 1925, Joan was the youngest daughter of Lillian and Walker Kelly. She attended Fendalton Primary School and Christchurch Girls High School, before training to be a shorthand typist and working in the office of Glassons Ltd.
She met her husband Laurie on a visit to “Lawford” West Melton, and they married on the 12th of May 1948.
Country life posed many changes for Joan after moving from the city to their new home at Gum Grove Farm on Sandy Knolls Road; there was no electricity, and she used a coal range for cooking on and for heating their hot water.
Family was important to Joan, as was supporting Laurie on the farm by providing food and baking for the farm workers.
Joan was an active member in the West Melton community, being involved with the West Melton Presbyterian Church, West Melton Plunket, West Melton School Pool fundraising committee, and Rural Women New Zealand; she was made a life member of Rural Women in 2007.
She passed away on the 7th of September 2009.
