TitleEel History Was a MysteryDescriptionThe mysterious origin of eels is shown in this film made by Maori film-maker Ramai (1916-2014) (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu) and her Pākeha husband Rudall Hayward (1900 - 1974) in 1968.
Footage of eeling and eel processing at Te Roto o Wairewa Lake Forsyth occurs around 10 minutes into this 18-minute film. A boy called 'Wiremu' is spoken to by his grandmother, showing him how eels are cleaned, salted and dried on a whata, which is covered by sacking to avoid a coming storm. She discusses the method of preserving by smoking, a more modern method than drying the eels.
The migration of eels into Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere is also shown.Date1968SourceNgā Taonga Sound and VisionGeolocation[1]
