TitleMavis Barnett and Canterbury TownshipDescriptionThe 1960 oil painting of Dunsandel, called 'Canterbury Township' by Russell Clark was purchased in the late 1960s by Dunsandel farming couple Mavis (née Sheat) and Mervyn Barnett. They had been told about it by David Doak, who met Mervyn at the Canterbury Rugby Football Union. David had seen the painting at the University of Canterbury where Russell Clark was teaching in the School of Art at the time.
Mavis, who had never bought art before, loved it as it was a familiar scene in a place she has devoted her life to through much community work: she received a Queen's Service Medal for Community Services in 2016.DateAugust 2024PhotographerSarah Davy
