Brookside Presbyterian Church
Description
NameBrookside Presbyterian Church
DescriptionIn 1865 a Sabbath School was started by early settlers, John Cunningham and John Stewart, when the district was part of the Lincoln and Prebbleton charge.
In 1867 the church was built on a site given by John Cunningham at a cost of £205.
The Star newspaper of January 4, 1869 reported on the annual tea meeting held in the church where the school children were examined by the Rev J Campbell and prizes were distributed.
The church served as the first school until later in 1869.
By 1872 the church was under the Leeston charge, and in 1874 it was enlarged by 16 feet. Two years later trees and shrubs were planted. The trees still remain today.
A harmonium was bought in 1878, and the Brookside Cemetery on Boundary Creek Road, was acquired the same year.
In 1899 the church was extended further at a cost of £190.14.6.
During the 1899 year there were eight marriages, 27 baptisms and eight funerals. There was a total of 235 members.
The last service took place in July 1966, when the Presbyterians joined with other denominations to worship in the Anglican Church.
The Sunday School continued to be used until the church was demolished in 1976 and materials such as the windows and doors and some timber, were used to build a Sunday School on the Anglican Church site.
In 1977 the site was sold and a house was built for Rodney Bryant. The architect was Sir Miles Warren.
