TitleTe Waihora Lake Ellesmere, Te Ahu Patiki Mount Herbert and Bank's PeninsulaDescriptionA watercolour painting of Lake Ellesmere, Mt Herbert and Banks Peninsula by Rev. Alfred Watson Hands (1849-1927). The painting is held in Canterbury Museum.
Painted from the Taumutu area, it shows Kaitorere Spit and Banks Peninsula in the distance, and Te Ahu Patiki Mount Herbert on the left, with figures and two structures in the foreground. From this perspective, the way the Kaitorere Spit functioned as an early trail used by Māori is evident.
According to the Blain Biographical Directory, Hands was a London architect by trade, who became an Anglican minister. He also had interests in ethnography and classics.
According to George McDonald, Hands was the Anglican curate in the Southbridge parish from 1882-1886. He also designed the Anglican church at Dunsandel and the Sunday School rooms at Leeston.
