Waihora Whata Rau - the hundred platforms of Waihora
Description
NameWaihora Whata Rau - the hundred platforms of WaihoraDescriptionWelcome to the collection of stories around Waihora Whata Rau - the hundred platforms of Waihora, through the heritage panel at the tuna (eel) sculpture at Leeston.
Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere is a place of abundance and diversity. A rich source of mahika kai (food, gathering places, resources and knowledge), it has sustained the people of Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki and the Selwyn District for 40 generations.
Waihora Whata Rau describes the many traditional raised food storage platforms, called whata, visible across the flat landscape of Ellesmere and Leeston. Whata showed the bounty of the land and water, signalling to travellers the location of pā (settlements), kai (food) and manaaki (hospitality).
Te Waihora is also one of our most important wetland habitats, home to a remarkable number of bird, fish, insect, reptile and plant species. Date2024
