Arthur's Pass Library
Description
TitleArthur's Pass Library
DescriptionThe Arthur's Pass library was established in June 1941, with a payment of one pound and 13 shillings to the County Library Service. It was housed in the old hitching post building which was used at the time as a social hall. The library service was comprised of Library Service hampers that arrived in standard large wooden boxes which were opened with a key that was exactly the same as every other hamper key in the country. The hampers were transported to the village via the Christchurch train (as the NZ Road Services bus which was used in later years had not come into being).
Unfortunately the hitching post building was demolished, and the library was moved into its second home, the doctor's rooms on Rough Creek Terrace near the park workshop, where local resident Judy Charles was the librarian. It was here in 1956 that the delivery of the library service changed to being delivered by book van.
The third move of the library was to the Community Centre on School Terrace in 1978. It was here that the book van was replaced by book hampers again during the mid 1970s. The book van returned in 1984. Arthur's Pass was then serviced by Selwyn Libraries' mobile library bus until January 2019, when a mobile van (called the Edge Connector Vehicle or ECV) was established.
