Springfield Library
Description
TitleSpringfield Library
DescriptionThe Springfield Public Library was organised in 1945 - the district was canvassed and 32 members subscribed, paying 2/6 each so that hampers of books could be provided from the Country Library Service. These were housed in private sitting-rooms until 1955 when a cupboard in the foyer of the new Tawera Hall became the library.
Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, interest in the library dwindled: by 1970 there was only 8 paid-up members. In 1977 the threat of closing the library revived local enthusiasm, and by 1986 the library had 55 family memberships.
Springfield was then serviced by Selwyn Libraries' mobile library bus until January 2019, when a mobile van (called the Edge Connector Vehicle or ECV) was established.
