The event was described in the local press as being well-attended. Attendees were issued with souvenir programmes and decade ribbons, and a jubilee cake was cut. People making speeches at the event included Sir Heaton Rhodes, who remembered an early visit to the school in 1899 when he was MP for the Ellesmere region. Mr R. M. Taiaroa spoke to remind the audience that Sedgemere School was the first under the Education Board to allow Māori pupils to enter the school "under the same terms as the white children...'
