TitleFormer Racecourse Hill Railway Station toiletDescriptionOne of the most humble of Selwyn's listed heritage buildings is the former Racecourse Hill Railway Station long drop toilet and urinal (H134). It has historical and social significance for its association with the development of the Midland Railway line and cultural value as a ‘classic’ New Zealand dunny. With its authentic building materials and style of construction, it also has contextual significance as a historic feature at Racecourse Hill, serving as a reminder of the 99-year old station that once shared this site. The exact date of the toilet is unknown, but believed to be prior to 1950.
Our favourite features of this building are the trap-door in the exterior of the long-drop, to allow the 'night-soil man' to empty its contents; and the fabulous yellow duck toilet-roll holder!PhotographerSarah Davy
