DescriptionA painted sign photographed outside Jack Rich's former shop on South Terrace in Darfield after the adjacent premises (the former Four Square grocery) was demolished in September 2019. To a lot of locals' surprise, the original wall of the surviving building still had Jack Rich’s signage painted on it, even though he had not been a tenant of the shop for many years.
Jack Rich was a painter and decorator who also sold sporting goods in his store, as well as paint, glass and wallpaper. In June 1961 he also advertised toys, silverware and china, as well as being an agent for Ultimate Ekco transistors, radios and televisions. In 1973 he was advertising that he was an agent for the Canterbury Building Society. In June 1980 he was advertising the sale of 'shooting requirements - everything for the shooter and hunter'. He sold salmon fishing equipment in 1982. His shop was subsequently taken over by Mrs Margaret Lee, trading as Darfield Drapery.
